If your next job, project or contract has you heading to Brisbane, there's a good chance the work itself isn't in the CBD. Brisbane's southside includes major industrial and logistics precincts around Rocklea, Acacia Ridge and Archerfield, alongside established commercial and dining centres such as Sunnybank. It's also, quietly, one of the smartest places to base yourself on a work trip.

Whether you're a contractor, a corporate traveler on a longer assignment, or a crew needing somewhere practical to land, here's what you need to know.

Staying in the city sounds convenient until you do the math. CBD hotels mean paying city prices for a room you barely use, fighting for parking, and commuting out to your job site every morning while everyone else commutes in.

Basing yourself southside flips that. You're close to the industrial precincts around Rocklea, Acacia Ridge and Archerfield, and you have convenient access to the Ipswich Motorway and several major southside arterials. From rail-served suburbs such as Rocklea and Sunnybank, direct trains provide access to South Bank and the CBD without touching city parking. Southside accommodation can offer better value than some CBD options, particularly where off-street parking is included, and after a long shift you are minutes from your door — not spending additional time travelling back from the city through peak-hour traffic.

Rocklea is best known as the home of the Brisbane Markets - Queensland's only central wholesale fruit and vegetable market, occupying a 77-hectare site, with warehousing, wholesale and logistics operations all around it. On a Saturday morning, the Saturday Fresh Market at 385 Sherwood Road is a genuinely good way to stock the apartment fridge for the week.

For getting around, Rocklea punches above its weight. Sitting roughly 10 km south of the CBD, Rocklea station — recently rebuilt under the Cross River Rail upgrades and fully accessible — is on the Beenleigh line with direct services through South Bank to Roma Street in around 20 to 25 minutes, and driving takes a similar time outside peak hour.

Drivers are equally well served: the Ipswich Motorway and major arterials like Ipswich Road and Beaudesert Road are right there, making Rocklea a genuinely central base for jobs across the southside, western suburbs or out toward Ipswich.

Good for: market and logistics workers, contractors on southside or western projects, anyone who wants both train and motorway options.

If your work trip includes client dinners, team meals, or you simply refuse to eat sad hotel food for three weeks straight, Sunnybank is your suburb. Often called Brisbane's Little Asia, it's widely known for its extensive Asian dining scene — Queensland tourism describes it as a key destination for authentic Asian food. The dining precincts at Market Square and the long-established Sunnybank Plaza, which promotes its own strong Asian dining focus, cover everything from noodles and dumplings to hotpot, Korean BBQ and bubble tea, with well over a hundred stores between them.

It's also the most naturally corporate-friendly of the three suburbs: established, well-serviced, with shopping centres, gyms, medical centres and supermarkets all close by.

Sunnybank station is on the Beenleigh line too, with direct trains to South Bank and the CBD in roughly half an hour — easy enough for a meeting in town without moving your whole base.

Good for: corporate travellers, professionals on extended assignments, anyone who rates good food as non-negotiable.

Acacia Ridge is one of Brisbane's major industrial hubs, with a large industrial precinct and freight infrastructure, plus Archerfield Airport next door. If your project is in the area, staying local means a commute measured in minutes.

Honest transport note: Acacia Ridge doesn't have its own train station. Buses along Beaudesert Road are the main public transport, and the nearest rail is Coopers Plains station on the Beenleigh line, a few kilometres north. In practice, most people working here drive — and that's where the suburb shines, with easy access to Beaudesert Road, the Logan Motorway and the wider southside road network, plus off-street parking at your accommodation for the ute or van. Day-to-day basics are sorted too: Acacia Marketplace on Beaudesert Road has both a Woolworths and an ALDI, and Sunnybank's food scene is a short drive away when the crew wants a proper feed.

Good for: contractors and crews working in the Acacia Ridge–Archerfield precinct, FIFO-style project teams, anyone travelling with work vehicles.
